BOSTON – Finishing among the top 16 programs during last week's national championship, the Northeastern Overwatch team will chase regional supremacy on Saturday, April 17, when the Huskies vie for the crown at the Boston Uprising Collegiate Cup. For the first time during the 2020-21 season, Northeastern will be competing live and in-person as the semifinal and championship rounds take place at the Helix eSports Center in Patriot Place next to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
1.
Tournament Overview: Hosted by Boston Uprising – Boston's professional esports franchise in the Overwatch League – the Boston Uprising Collegiate Cup is an annual event that determines New England's top collegiate Overwatch program. The spring 2021 field featured 15 entries from nine schools across the region, led by the top-seeded Northeastern varsity squad. Preliminary rounds were conducted virtually on April 9 and April 10 with the four semifinalists advancing to Foxborough on April 17.
Â
2.Â
Road to the Semifinals:Â As the event's four-time champion, Northeastern was rewarded with the single-elimination tournament's No. 1 seed, earning a bye into the quarterfinal round. There, the Huskies staged the 2-0 sweep against eighth-seeded Emerson (April 9) to move back into the semifinals, where NU will oppose fourth-seeded Becker College. Should Northeastern advance, the Huskies will await the winner between second-seeded Boston University and third-seeded Johnson & Wales in Saturday's championship match.
Â
3.
Title Defense:Â Northeastern is looking to extend its streak of tournament titles, earning top prize during each of the last four events (fall 2018, spring 2019, fall 2019 and spring 2020). The Huskies went undefeated across maps contested during each of their first three championships and enjoyed similar success during the spring 2020 event, sharing the title with Boston University after a late defeat to the Terriers.
