CLEMSON, S.C. - After dropping the first two games of the weekend, the Northeastern baseball team (7-7-1) took down #18 Clemson (14-1) by a score of 5-3 on Sunday. The Huskies handed the Tigers their first loss of the 2022 season, as they were one of the final three Division 1 teams without a loss on the year.
- It took both offenses a bit of time to get going as the game was scoreless in the first two innings. For NU, Wyatt Scotti (4-0) started the game giving up just one hit, and striking out three in the first three innings.
- The Huskies got on the board first in the top of the third; after Jack Doyle singled up the right side, Justin Bosland advanced him on a sacrifice bunt, and Max Viera advanced him to third on a ground-out. A hard hit ball from Mike Sirota to the edge of the infield forced a tough throw to first and allowed Doyle to score from third.
- In the top of the fourth, Luke Beckstein was hit by a pitch, and Mark Darakjy advanced him with a ground out. Jeff Costello hit a blooper to short stop that was unable to be picked up, putting Beckstein on third. A bunt by JP Olson dribbled to the pitcher but the throw to third couldn't be collected and Beckstein ran home to extend the lead.
- Clemson got one back in the bottom of the inning on a sac-fly to make the score 2-1.
- The Huskies had their best scoring inning in the top of the fifth. Mike Sirota was hit by a pitch and then stole second - a walk to Corey DiLoreto placed him on first and Beckstein hit a single up the middle to score Sirota. The following batter, Mark Darakjy, faced a new pitcher and hit a single to the same spot to score DiLoreto. JP Olson looked to have cleared the bases on an infield hit but he was called out at first; upon review, he was called safe, with only one of the runners scoring. The Huskies' lead was 5-1 at the end of the fifth.
- Clemson would tack on two more runs with a solo home run in the seventh and eighth innings, but the NU bullpen held the 5-3 lead to take the victory.
- Scotti finished his day with 7.1 IP, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned), but striking out 11. He was relieved by Jordy Allard (0.2 IP. 1H) and Thomas Balboni (1.0 IP, 1H, 1K, SAVE).
- The Huskies are now 4-0 in Sunday games this season.
The Huskies begin a homestand with three of their next five games at home at Friedman Diamond. They will face Bryant and Merrimack in two midweek contests in Brookline this Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15 and 16 at 3pm. They will then travel to Holy Cross Friday, and then host Holy Cross and Brown in a neutral site the following Saturday, before game two of the series with the Crusaders.
