HARRISONBURG, Va. – After dropping the first two games of the weekend, Northeastern University (18-17-1, 4-8 CAA) took down James Madison University (19-16, 6-6 CAA) by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Park.
Â
An overall solid pitching day for Northeastern was supported by two big home runs late in the game to seal the victory for the Huskies.
- Both teams struggled getting any offense going in the opening six innings, with a total of four hits between the two teams in those frames.
- NU's starter Cam Schlittler (ND) worked 6.2 innings allowing five hits, just one earned run, and three walks. He set a new career high in strikeouts, fanning 12 JMU batters, beating out his last start by one K.
- Northeastern was able to break the 0-0 stalemate in the top of the seventh, when designated hitter Kyle Hoog belted a home run over the right field wall to score the first run of the ballgame. It was Hoog's first homer, in his first career start.
- JMU would answer right back in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI triple to tie it up.
- The next inning, Mike Sirota would reach base on a fielder's choice as JMU could not complete a double play. The next batter Spenser Smith worked a marathon 11-pitch at-bat ending with a two-run home run to right field to retake the lead, 3-1
- After the bases were loaded with Max Viera on third, Luke Beckstein on second, and Jeff Costello on first due to an intentional walk, Danny Crossen showed his patience waiting out a five-pitch walk to record an RBI, as Viera trotted home as all runners advanced.
- Eric Yost took over on the mound for the final out of the seventh – he worked 1.1 innings allowing no hits, walks, or runs, earning the win (2-2).
- Thomas Balboni once again took over in the ninth with a three-run lead and earned his sixth save of the season allowing no hits, walks, or runs, and getting the final out by way of strikeout.
- The Huskies are 8-2 in Sunday games this season.
