A collegiate focus in field hockey and lacrosse crystallized at Northeastern, where she was a Division I all star in field hockey as a junior and senior, and a member of the National Sports Festival squad in that time; she also earned berths for field hockey on the U.S. Junior National Team, the Pike's Peak International Festival team and the U.S. National Team. Meanwhile she was one of New England's best lacrosse players, lettering four seasons, and captaining the squad for two. She was the Lacrosse MVP in 1984. Vera was an Academic All American in field hockey and lacrosse as a senior in 1985, when she somehow managed to also letter in indoor track.

In 1980, as a freshman, Vera helped her field hockey team advance to the NCAA qualifying round in Michigan and in 1983, the team traveled to NCAA District play in Carbondale, Illinois.
