James W. Dietz was elected to the Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievement in both collegiate and international rowing.

Dietz was akin to a "child prodigy" in the world of rowing, winning the Canadian National youth single sculls championship in 1964 at age 15 and thereafter until 1967. He was the American National Schoolboy champ from 1965-67. In 1967 he won the World Youth Championship for single sculls and set a world record that still stands today.

A 1972 graduate of Northeastern, he captained the 1967 freshman crew and won letters in 1970 and 1971 as the stroke of the varsity eight. As one of the world's premier scullers, he has been a member of the United States World Championship rowing team from 1970 through 1978. In 1972 and 1976 he was a member of the U.S. Olympic rowing team and in 1976 he was the captain of that crew. Dietz has won Silver medals in single sculls in the 1974 World Championships and 1975 Pan Am Games and was fifth in the 1972 Olympiad. He won a gold medal in double sculls in the 1967 Pan Am games. He is the holder of 32 United States national titles and 36 Canadian national titles. He has won international gold medals in sculling from Porto Alegro, Brazil to Ratzeburg, West Germany and was a four time finalist in the Diamond Sculls at Henley.
