Varsity Club Hall of Fame
James L. Bell, who passed away in 1998, was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in the sport of ice hockey.
As a member of the induction class of 1974, Bell was one of the original six inductees into the Northeastern Hall of Fame.
Bell was both an outstanding player and coach of hockey at Northeastern. A member of the Class of 1954, he won three varsity letters and three All New England selections. Bell passed up his senior year to play for the Boston Olympics of the Eastern Hockey League. In his junior year of 1948, he was voted the outstanding player in New England as he led Northeastern to the finals of the New England playoffs for the right to qualify for the first ever NCAA Championship.
His top coaching triumphs over his 15 seasons (1955-70), were his 1964-65 team which had an 18-10 record and won the ECAC Holiday Tournament; in being named New England Coach of the Year in 1956; and receiving the Shaeffer Pen Award for outstanding contribution to college hockey in 1970.
After hockey, Bell joined the engineering firm of Fenton G. Keyes Associates where he rose to associate before retiring.
