Nikiya Reid, Class of 2002, has been elected to the Northeastern University Hall of Fame for excellence in the sport of track & field.
Reid, between 1998 and 2001 became one of the supreme track stars in New England. She amassed 19 individual titles in the America East Championships and 12 in New England Championships.
She came to Northeastern as a bona fide star from Trenton Central High School in Trenton, N.J. She was a four-year member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. She was team MVP all four years and earned numerous All-County and All-State honors.
She justified Coach Sherman Hart's faith in her when she exploded over the finish line of the 55-meter hurdles at the America East indoor championships in record-breaking time. She completed her freshman season by winning both the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash in the outdoor championship. The Huskies won both the indoor and outdoor America East titles.
In her sophomore season, Reid again won the hurdles at the America East indoors and added the 200-meter dash to win the Outstanding Performer Award. At the indoor New England's she won both the hurdles and the 200. It was more of the same during the outdoor season. At America East and at the New England's she won the 100 hurdles and the 200. Northeastern won both New England Championships and won the America East outdoors while placing second indoors.
Her junior season of 2000 saw more titles. At America East indoor championship, she won the dash, the hurdles and the 200 plus Outstanding Performer. Outdoors she won the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles. Combined, this earned her America East Performer of the Year. At the New England's, she continued to pile up the gold with the hurdles and 200 indoors and the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles outdoors.
By her last year, she was a local legend. She captained both teams. Indoors, she won the hurdles for the fourth year in a row, the 200 for the third year in a row and was selected the America East Outstanding Performer for the third year in a row. Outdoors, she took the 200 and 100 hurdles for the fourth time and the 100 meter dash for the second straight time. For the second consecutive season, she was honored as the America East Performer of the Year. In the indoor New England's, she won the 200 and the hurdles for the third straight year and the dash for the second year in a row. Northeastern did not compete in the 2001 outdoor New England Championship.
Reid's number of records almost equaled her number of titles. She graduated with five Northeastern records and six in America East.
