Varsity Club Hall of Fame
George E. Yankowski was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his achievements in the sports of basketball and baseball.
As a member of the induction class of 1974, Yankowski was one of the original six inductees into the Northeastern Hall of Fame.
Yankowski was one of Northeastern's greatest and most successful baseball players in the history of the sport at the University. After a stellar career with the Huskies as a hard-hitting catcher, he played professional baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox of the American League in the middle and late forties while finishing up his degree at Northeastern in 1947.
Yankowski never completely walked away from the baseball diamond, as after he retired from the professional ranks, he became head baseball coach, as well as a teacher, at Watertown High School in 1950. He remained there for over 25 years. He also returned to his alma mater, as he assumed the position of guidance counselor and coordinator of the cooperative education program.
